PSR uses Julia for energy market simulation, analytics and planning

PSR is a global electricity and natural gas consulting, analytics, and technology firm operating in more than 70 countries. The company needed a faster, more nimble way to build and customize energy market simulation, planning, and optimization tools to keep up with diverse regulations, customer requirements, and time-to-market demands. Julia Computing’s Julia language and JuMP optimization package were used to support PSR’s commercial optimization models.

With Julia Computing, PSR streamlined development and deployment of complex optimization software, including SDDP, OPTGEN, and OPTFLOW models. The results were significant: investment optimization model code was reduced from 40,000 lines to 4,000, and SDDP code from 120,000 lines to 14,000, helping improve speed, productivity, and bug reduction. Julia Computing also helped PSR test ideas in hours instead of days or weeks, while improving interoperability with legacy C and Fortran code and supporting AWS-based deployment.
