Case Study: Instron achieves 500x faster crash simulation design with Julia Computing

A Julia Computing Case Study

Instron speeds crash simulation design 500x with Julia Computing

Instron, a leader in the materials testing industry, faced a challenge with the slow and difficult-to-maintain physics-based model for its Hydropuls Catapult System, a crash simulation product. Their previous attempt to use third-party modeling software resulted in workarounds and a dual-language problem that prevented a release. Julia Computing provided a solution using its Dyad (formerly JuliaSim) platform and ModelingToolkit.jl.

By migrating to Julia Computing's tools, Instron streamlined its modeling and simulation workflow. This enabled a 500x speedup in controller optimization runtime, reducing a process that would have taken over 166 days down to just hours. This massive performance gain allowed Instron to design a new, simpler, and lower-cost system configuration called "Catapult Light," which substantially reduced cost and complexity while enabling new types of testing.
