Drishti Eye Hospitals, a provider of eye diagnosis and care to thousands of rural Indians, needed a faster way to screen for diabetic retinopathy, a disease that affects millions of diabetics and can lead to blindness if not detected early. Julia Computing worked with IBM to analyze retinal fundus images and support deep learning–based diagnosis using a low-cost fundus camera.

Julia Computing implemented a deep learning solution powered by Julia on IBM Power8 servers with NVIDIA Tesla K80 GPU accelerators. The combined system increased image processing speed by 57x, enabling retinal screening to be performed by trained technicians more efficiently and helping expand timely diagnosis for patients with limited access to care.
