Wanelo - Customer Case Study

Wanelo is a social shopping platform that aggregates stores, products and users into a single site and mobile apps (about 8 million registered users, six million products from 200,000+ stores). After a 2012 rewrite to Ruby on Rails the site’s requests per minute jumped from ~3,000 to peaks above 200,000 with the launch of iOS/Android apps, creating a need for a public cloud that could deliver high CPU and I/O performance, handle daily 10x traffic swings without costly overprovisioning, and offer more OS functionality than typical Linux-only clouds.

Wanelo moved to Joyent Compute Service on SmartOS, gaining near-native CPU and disk I/O, ZFS data integrity, ARC caching and instant CPU bursting, plus responsive support. The result was a much smaller infrastructure footprint that handled huge traffic spikes and matched the productivity gains of the Rails rewrite—Wanelo reports roughly half the cost and the ability to serve about five times the traffic compared with a peer—while reliably supporting peaks around 200,000 RPM.
