Louisville Metro - Customer Case Study

Louisville Metro partnered with Johnson Controls to support its Sustain Louisville initiative and reduce energy use across nearly 200 municipal buildings. Facing aging, inefficient equipment and limited capital for upgrades, the city needed a way to improve sustainability without adding financial risk or drawing down bond capacity. Johnson Controls provided an energy savings performance contract to finance the work through future savings.

Johnson Controls implemented about $27 million in energy-efficient upgrades, including lighting, HVAC, water conservation, solar panels, and building controls. The project is projected to save Louisville Metro $56 million over 25 years, guarantee $2.7 million in annual energy savings, reduce water use by 395,000 gallons in less than a year, and cut CO2 emissions by 19,900 metric tons annually. It also created 400 jobs and helped advance the city’s sustainability and economic development goals.
