Liverpool John Moores University - Customer Case Study

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), one of the UK’s largest city-based universities, needed a reliable way to manage access across its Northern and Southern campuses for more than 30,000 cardholders. As its enrolment numbers and security requirements grew, the university sought a system that could support multiple buildings, different user groups, and a transition from older watermark cards to smarter identity technology. Johnson Controls provided the CEM AC2000 SE access control platform with S600 readers.

Johnson Controls implemented an integrated solution using AC2000 SE, VIPPS for card production, and AED for real-time alarm monitoring, while upgrading the S600 readers so they could support both watermark and Mifare smart cards during the transition. The result was a flexible “one-card” system for access, library services, vending, photocopying, and parking, improving efficiency and helping LJMU maintain a secure environment. The AC2000 SE system has been continually expanded for over ten years, and Johnson Controls’ tailored upgrades have given the university a scalable platform with room for future integration with fire alarms and CCTV.
