Gatwick Airport - Customer Case Study

Gatwick Airport, one of the world’s busiest single-runway airports, needed a security and operations platform that could scale with passenger growth, changing aviation regulations, and ongoing airport expansion. Johnson Controls provided the CEM AC2000 Airport Edition (AE) access control solution, along with PedMon people counting technology, to support the airport’s complex security and operational requirements across its North and South Terminals.

Johnson Controls expanded and tailored the system to cover new developments such as Pier 6, adding around 260 card readers for access control, lift and escalator integration, and energy-saving automation. The solution also helped manage loading bridge usage, improve maintenance visibility, and optimize inter-terminal train scheduling; results included more efficient operations, reduced fuel use and wear on trains, automatic shutdown of unused equipment for energy conservation, and an estimated 50,000 fewer coach movements per year.
