Diamond Offshore Drilling, a leading deepwater drilling contractor operating offshore rigs around the world, needed a reliable communications system for its Ocean Rover driller’s production areas in a hazardous environment. Johnson Controls, through its Tyco Fire & Integrated Solutions/Spector Lumenex business, was selected to provide an explosion-proof intercom solution suited for offshore drilling operations.

Johnson Controls designed, manufactured, tested, and commissioned an SL700 Mentor Driller’s Intercom System, including a Mentor SL700 Intercom Central Node and explosion-proof Mentor Digital Intercom Units. The system delivered compliant, wired communications for the drilling area and improved operational coordination in an explosion-risk environment, though the case study does not provide a specific quantitative performance result.
