A Johnson Controls Case Study
Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC needed a way to build a new, highly advanced hospital campus that would improve patient care, safety, and operational efficiency without relying on legacy systems. Working with Johnson Controls, the hospital used the Johnson Controls Technology Contracting model to plan a fully integrated technology environment for its new campus.
Johnson Controls implemented a single IP-based, campus-wide network connecting nearly 30 systems, including Metasys building management, P2000 security, fire alarm, nurse call, RTLS, VoIP, video surveillance, and electronic medical records. The result was a fully digital hospital with reduced infrastructure and administrative costs, faster response times, quieter patient areas, and improved visibility and control across the campus; measurable impacts included 100% campus wireless coverage, about 2,000 access points, 1.6 million square feet managed efficiently, 800 doors integrated for access control, a 40% reduction in water use, and LEED certification for both the hospital and research center.
