A Johnson Controls Case Study
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which manages thousands of small, remote facilities across 12 western states, faced the challenge of reducing energy use, improving aging infrastructure, and meeting federal executive orders on energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction. Johnson Controls helped address this through an energy services partnership using Energy Savings Performance Contracts (ESPCs), along with ARRA funding and utility rebates.
Johnson Controls implemented a phased program of energy upgrades at more than 100 sites, including HVAC and control system improvements, lighting retrofits, occupancy sensors, programmable thermostats, and renewable energy systems such as solar photovoltaics and wind power. The results included more than $1.2 million in annual energy cost savings, a 30% reduction from FY 2005 baseline energy use, 30,758 MBtus of reduced consumption, and 7 million pounds of greenhouse gas reductions, while also speeding project delivery and improving facility conditions.
