Strategic experimentation helps engineer road safety improvements

North Carolina State University, specifically a PhD candidate in its Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, faced the challenge of understanding how visual stimuli from road signage and in-vehicle technologies contribute to distracted driving. The research aimed to identify these cognitive distractions to propose new safety-focused designs for both civilian and police vehicle equipment.

Using JMP for design of experiments (DOE) and statistical analysis, the researcher was able to strategically design tests and analyze data to understand how different factors affect driver attention. The results of this JMP-powered analysis are being used to formulate improved design and formatting guidelines for on-road signage to be provided to the Department of Transportation, with the ultimate goal of improving safety and saving lives.
