Case Study: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill achieves climate neutrality progress with JMP

A JMP Case Study

Preview of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Case Study

Researcher assesses a university’s carbon footprint using JMP® statistical discovery software from SAS

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill needed a way to assess and track its greenhouse gas emissions as part of its goal to become climate neutral by 2050. The challenge was handling a huge, complex campus-wide emissions inventory and finding energy-saving opportunities across a large university campus. UNC Chapel Hill used JMP statistical discovery software from SAS to visualize and analyze the data.

JMP helped UNC Chapel Hill explore emissions by building, spot usage patterns, and compare energy data across time and sources. With JMP, the university identified inefficiencies, including a faulty HVAC valve in one building that was quickly fixed, saving about $30,000 a year; it also helped UNC Chapel Hill save at least $2,000 per month on energy costs in another case. Overall, JMP enabled faster data-driven decisions and supported the university’s climate-neutrality efforts.
