How Data Helps Drive Draft Decisions For The St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals needed a better way to complement traditional scouting with analytics so they could evaluate and predict player performance more accurately and make smarter draft and acquisition decisions. They turned to JMP statistical discovery software from SAS to help their amateur draft analytics team work with large, complex player data sets.

Using JMP, the Cardinals were able to speed up regression analysis, explore relationships in the data, and present findings through visual tools like heat maps and the JMP Profiler. JMP helped the team identify overlooked players, strengthen decision-making, and support a collaborative scouting-plus-analytics approach; since 2005, the Cardinals have reached the playoffs four times and won two world championships, while also producing more draft picks who reached the majors than any other organization.
