A JMP Case Study
Chicago Botanic Garden needed to uncover breadfruit’s wild ancestor and understand the crop’s genetic origins so it could support future improvement, including better yield, taste, and drought or salt tolerance. The research was led by Nyree Zerega, using JMP statistical discovery software from SAS to analyze DNA fingerprinting data.
Using JMP, Chicago Botanic Garden identified that breadfruit came from two different wild species in different regions and created clear visualizations of cultivar relationships. The findings helped build a germplasm collection for ongoing study and improvement, and farmers can now request cultivars best suited to their regions, with JMP enabling the research and communication of the results.
