A JMP Case Study
Carleton College, a private liberal arts college in Northfield, MN, faced a challenge in teaching genomics: helping undergraduate genetics students think at the whole-transcriptome level and use data visualization effectively. With JMP Genomics from JMP, professor Susan Singer introduced students to large-scale research on the plant Chamaecrista fasciculata, aiming to move them beyond gene-by-gene analysis.
JMP implemented JMP Genomics in an undergraduate genetics course, giving students tools such as volcano plots and heat maps to explore thousands of transcripts visually and identify statistically significant differences. The results were clear: students asked more informed questions, thought more visually, and produced stronger models and papers, with observers noting substantial improvements in higher-order thinking, hypothesis generation, and strategy choices compared with pre-JMP days.
