California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) sought to educate statistics majors to meet the growing global demand for data-literate professionals and analysts capable of interpreting big data. The program successfully contributed to a significant growth in the statistics department, which welcomed 35 freshmen in 2015 compared to just 15 two years earlier, preparing them to fill the critical shortfall of data analysts.
