Beijing Aquarium finds clarity in analytics

Beijing Aquarium, the world’s largest inland marine facility, faced the challenge of managing water quality for its beluga whale tank while balancing visitor visibility, energy costs, and the needs of endangered marine species. The team lacked a reliable way to predict how factors like circulation rate and time of day affected turbidity, so they turned to JMP for help in understanding and controlling these complex conditions.

Using JMP, Beijing Aquarium’s engineers built models to test water quality variables and guide circulation decisions throughout the day. The result was a brighter display during visiting hours, energy use cut by two-thirds, and monthly savings of about $5,000 for the beluga tank alone. JMP also reduced reporting time from a full week for six people to just two days for one person.
