A JBKnowledge Case Study
Matterport, a venture-backed hardware and software company known for low-cost 3D scanners and virtual tours, faced the challenge of making reality capture affordable and easy-to-use for the AEC market, which has historically relied on expensive, high-accuracy laser scanners. JBKnowledge evaluated the Matterport scanner and cloud services to see whether the system could reduce cost and training barriers while providing usable measurements and models for existing-condition documentation.
JBKnowledge’s evaluation involved assembling the tripod-mounted Matterport unit, pairing it to an iPad, capturing scans, and processing them through Matterport’s cloud and Matterport Workshop. JBKnowledge found the solution delivered real-time automatic registration, fast scans (<1 minute per capture), and a Street View–style walkthrough with shareable measurements; measured accuracy averaged 92.5% within acceptable range and exported point clouds reached about 99% accuracy. JBKnowledge concluded that, at roughly $4,500 plus a $500+/year subscription, Matterport is an economical option that effectively addresses AEC pain points around cost and registration.
