Virgin Money Leverages Open Source Business Intelligence to Help Charities and Fundraisers Give More, Do More

Virgin Money Giving (VMG), the not‑for‑profit fundraising arm of Virgin Money, set out to help charities and event participants raise funds online. VMG needed a secure, easy-to-use web platform that let fundraisers create personal pages, process payments, integrate with social media and charities’ existing systems, and—critically—provide powerful, flexible reporting for both small and large organizations, all while keeping costs to a minimum.

VMG built a 99% open‑source solution using Apache, JBoss, MySQL and Java, and embedded Jaspersoft for business intelligence to deliver single‑sign‑on, branded reporting plus standardized reports and flexible data extracts for large charities. The result was rapid adoption—fundraisers can create a page in under five minutes—efficient donations processing, and lower operating costs that translate to an estimated additional £5 million to charities for every £100 million donated.
