The U.S. Naval Safety Center (NSC) - Customer Case Study

The U.S. Naval Safety Center (NSC) improves Fleet readiness by eliminating preventable mishaps and built the Web-enabled Safety System (WSS) to track and report mishaps and hazards across the Department of the Navy. The initial WSS rollout focused on two high-risk activities—diving and parachuting—and the IT team sought an open source–based architecture to minimize costs and ensure flexibility; however, proprietary reporting tools proved impossible to adapt to new DoD hardware token authentication requirements.

The NSC replaced its closed reporting stack with Jaspersoft’s open source JasperServer, which integrated easily with DoD authentication, supported role-based security, and fit the Java/JBoss-based WSS environment. The solution now captures and tracks diving and parachuting mishaps to create safety baselines used for trend analysis, with diving reports live and parachuting reports imminent, and the team is planning data-warehousing and ETL/analytics expansions using additional Jaspersoft tools.
