The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC), a new medical school serving northeastern Pennsylvania, needed fast, flexible access to administrative data across finance, HR, admissions, student services and faculty development. With a small IT staff and transaction-focused systems that offered only limited, rigid reporting, users relied on IT to run SQL and export spreadsheets—creating bottlenecks that drove the college to pursue a self-service data mart and BI solution.

TCMC chose Jaspersoft and built a low‑cost open source BI stack (MySQL, Apache, PHP) to deliver ad hoc query domains within eight weeks and full reports and dashboards within six months. The drag‑and‑drop ad hoc tool and iReport templates replaced cumbersome spreadsheet processes, enabled drill‑down budget and fund‑accounting reporting, supported 70+ regular users, and earned the team a Jaspersoft BI Rock Star award—while laying the groundwork for future OLAP and in‑memory analytics.
