Genomics-focused research institute simplifies informatics with open source Business Intelligence

The J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI), a nonprofit genomics research center with about 350 scientists, needed flexible, browser-based reporting and conditional decision-making across four informatics pipelines. Researchers required self-service access to specialized reports with strong charting, easy report definition (minimal coding), integration with a Java-centric stack, and a low-cost/open-source licensing model.

JCVI implemented the open-source JasperReports engine and iReport Designer (Jaspersoft), embedding report initiation and output via web services into its JBoss/Oracle/MySQL/Tomcat environment. The solution gives 500+ users access to hundreds of customizable PDF/CSV reports (including cascading parameters), enables CSV exports that drive downstream pipeline processing, and has cut development effort while allowing rapid, ongoing report changes.
