Austin Energy Implementing Effective BI and Data Warehousing in Weeks

Austin Energy, the City of Austin’s publicly owned electric utility serving over 400,000 meters across 437 square miles, needed timely, low‑cost, and widely accessible performance metrics. Traditional BI and data‑warehouse approaches were slow, expensive and maintenance‑heavy—relying on aggregate tables, proprietary tools and lengthy projects—so the utility sought an agile, scalable solution that would run on existing infrastructure and support ad‑hoc analysis with secure, role‑based access.

Austin Energy implemented Jaspersoft’s BI suite and the Infobright columnar database, using JasperETL to automate nightly loads, and two part‑time project managers delivered a working data warehouse and dashboards in six weeks. The columnar engine compressed 2.5 million journal rows from ~5 GB to 74 MB, eliminated aggregate tables, cut development time fivefold, reduced data latency from six weeks to overnight, made a monthly 10‑hour report instantaneous, extended one metric to all business units in weeks, and lowered development and maintenance costs to roughly one‑tenth of traditional models.
