The NSW Department of Education re-engages Year 6, 8 and 10 science students with its VALID online test

The NSW Department of Education faced the unprecedented challenge of shifting its Year 6, 8, and 10 science assessments online, requiring a platform that could scale to support tens of thousands of concurrent students while meeting strict government data sovereignty requirements. Their technical team was concerned with high costs and scalability limitations, estimating a need for about 100 servers to manage the immense data load for this large-scale online testing.

Janison addressed these challenges by building a solution on Microsoft Azure, utilizing an innovative multi-tiered cache architecture and cloud entity storage to handle up to 6,000 transactions per second and ensure data remained onshore. The result was the successful delivery of the world's first large-scale online assessment to 40,000 students in a single day. By 2016, participation had doubled to 81,300 students. Janison's solution not only provided efficient, high-quality assessments but also transformed the test into an engaging experience that students looked forward to, as reported by teachers.
