The customer, NAPLAN Online, a national assessment program for Australian students, faced the challenge of modernizing its standardized testing process. The pen-and-paper format had significant shortcomings, including long result turnaround times, security vulnerabilities, and an inability to provide adaptive or equitable testing for a diverse student population across Australia. NAPLAN Online partnered with the vendor, Janison, to develop a new digital assessment platform to address these issues.

Janison implemented a highly scalable, cloud-based solution using Microsoft Azure to deliver the NAPLAN Online tests. The platform featured adaptive testing, a low-bandwidth option for remote schools, and auto-save functionality to prevent data loss. The results were transformative: Janison successfully delivered over 4.3 million tests to 1.2 million students in a single week, with a peak of 315,000 concurrent users. This led to faster results for teachers, enhanced equity and security, and the elimination of 30 million pieces of paper, significantly reducing the program's environmental impact.
