Case Study: UCSD IGPP achieves unified primary and secondary storage with iXsystems TrueNAS

UCSD secures storage for 200 users with iXsystems

The Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) at UCSD needed a unified primary storage solution for its 200 users operating in a complex multi-OS environment. Their challenge was to find a platform that could support all required protocols, including AFP and NFS, while offering features like snapshots, replication, and LDAP/AD integration, which previous solutions from large vendors had failed to provide.

iXsystems implemented a TrueNAS storage appliance equipped with high-performance flash and enterprise drives in a RAID-Z2 configuration. The solution provided the required multi-protocol support and critical data security features like ZFS snapshots and off-site replication. The IGPP was so pleased with the results that they purchased a second TrueNAS system. iXsystems' responsive support team provided exceptional service, even integrating a requested feature into a future release, giving the institute peace of mind that its valuable data is secure.
