McGill University - Customer Case Study

McGill University's School of Computer Science and its Goodman Cancer Research Centre needed a centralized storage solution to manage petabytes of research and user data. Facing budget constraints and a commitment to open-source software, they sought a scalable and simple-to-manage alternative to their previous Linux and BSD servers and in-house solutions. They evaluated several vendors, including iXsystems.

iXsystems implemented their TrueNAS enterprise storage array, which nearly halved the cost per gigabyte compared to other options. The solution provided petabyte-scale capacity with high availability, replication for disaster recovery, and robust data integrity through ZFS. McGill has since scaled their environment to over a petabyte of storage, drastically reducing administrative overhead and ensuring they have never lost any data, providing critical support for their research.
