Ixia and Alcatel-Lucent Validate IEEE1588v2 Performance for Mobile Backhaul

The customer, Alcatel-Lucent, faced the challenge of migrating to a cost-effective, all-IP mobile backhaul network. A major hurdle was ensuring their packet-based network could meet the strict clock synchronization requirements for 2G, 3G, and 4G mobile services, a capability traditionally handled by TDM networks. This was essential for their goal of a single, simplified network infrastructure.

The vendor, Ixia, provided a testing solution using its IxNetwork application to validate the performance of Alcatel-Lucent's IEEE 1588v2 implementation on its 7705 SAR routers. Ixia emulated grandmaster and hundreds of slave clocks, performed traffic generation, and triggered network failures. The tests proved the solution could successfully synchronize over 100 clocks while maintaining traffic performance and QoS, even during network failovers, providing the confidence needed for full network migration.
