UK Power Networks Dynamism of Distributed Generation Requires a Flexible, Robust and Long-Term Mode

UK Power Networks worked with Itron to address rising demand for distributed generation connections across its East of England service territory, where large solar and wind plants were creating grid constraints. Using Itron’s standards-based RF mesh communications network and smart grid platform, UK Power Networks aimed to find a flexible, long-term way to connect more renewable energy without costly network upgrades.

Itron implemented the Flexible Plug and Play (FPP) project with Active Network Management to provide real-time monitoring and control of distributed energy resources. The solution delivered an 87% reduction in connection costs for DERs, saved an average of 27 weeks on connection requests, and increased acceptance rates by 17%, while also supporting over £20 million in customer savings and successful deployment across a 700 km2 rural area.
