Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) needed a better way to detect meter tampering, bypasses, and malfunctions after its advanced meter rollout eliminated the monthly manual inspections that had previously helped spot theft. To address this challenge, SMUD worked with **Itron** using a revenue protection / data analytics solution for theft detection and lead generation.

**Itron** helped SMUD implement analytics software that combines AMI, billing, GIS, customer, weather, and other third-party data to identify and prioritize likely theft cases for field investigation. The system enabled SMUD to move from a reactive to a proactive model, generated thousands of leads, and improved safety and resource efficiency. In the first 12 months after implementation, SMUD billed an additional 15.5 million kWh and more than **$3 million** in additional revenue, while collected amounts increased from **$334,000** to **$723,000**.
