Modernizing Power Delivery, Improving Utility Storm Response and Enhancing Grid Reliability

Florida Power & Light (FPL) partnered with Itron to modernize its power delivery system across Florida and reduce streetlight operations and maintenance costs. To support its smart city and grid modernization goals, FPL needed a more efficient way to manage energy use, improve service reliability, and accelerate outage response and restoration.

Itron implemented North America’s largest networked street lighting program for FPL, using an IPv6-based multi-application network, Itron’s Streetlight.Vision software, and SELC control nodes to manage more than 500,000 smart streetlights alongside broader smart grid assets. The result was measurable impact including an estimated $46 million in annual opex savings, 5.1 million customer interruption minutes avoided per year, a 25% improvement in service reliability since 2010, and 100,000 avoided field visits.
