Gulf Power Raising the bar for automated residential price-based demand response programs

Gulf Power, a Northwest Florida utility serving more than 455,000 residential customers, needed to reduce generation needs, better use existing capacity, and improve customer satisfaction through a more effective residential demand response program. To support this goal, Gulf Power worked with Itron and its hosted demand management platform, IntelliSOURCE Enterprise, along with IntelliTEMP smart thermostats and IntelliPEAK digital control units.

Itron upgraded Gulf Power’s Energy Select critical-peak pricing program with broadband-enabled two-way communications and an easy-to-use web portal, allowing customers to automate cooling, heating, water heaters, and pool pumps based on variable pricing signals. The result was a major increase in participation, with more than 19,000 customers enrolled, customer service calls dropping from 6,000 to about 2,000 per year, attrition falling from 20% to under 2%, and customer satisfaction reaching 95%. The program also delivers measurable load reduction of 2.4 kW per household in winter and 1.7 kW in summer, helping Gulf Power defer new generation.
