Camden Pairs Itron Meters, Automated Meter Reading for Impressive Results

The City of Camden Municipal Utilities in South Carolina needed to replace aging electric and water meters that were causing maintenance problems, lost revenue, hard-to-read readings, and safety concerns for meter readers. After evaluating RF options, the utility selected Itron for an automated meter reading solution, using Itron RF technology with CENTRON and SENTINEL meters.

Itron implemented a pilot with 600 CENTRON meters and handhelds, which led the city to expand the rollout to 3,000 installed meters by year-end. The new system delivered improved accuracy, fewer re-reads, tampering alerts, and faster meter reading—cutting read time in half—and even captured about 2 kWh more per meter than electromechanical meters, creating meaningful revenue gains across 10,000 electric endpoints.
