Self-checkouts and digital queuing for better ergonomics, efficiency and customer satisfaction

The grocery store ICA Maxi Barkarbystaden in Stockholm faced a challenge in designing a new self-checkout area that was safe, efficient, and flexible to handle varying customer volumes and payment options. They partnered with vendor ITAB Group to create a layout that would improve ergonomics for staff and satisfaction for a diverse mix of shoppers, all while eliminating persistent queues.

ITAB implemented a flexible self-checkout zone featuring a digital queuing system, a cushioned ergonomic floor, and a total of 24 stations. This solution provided a better overview for staff and created a calmer, more pleasant atmosphere. The results for ICA Maxi were a significantly higher capacity, the complete elimination of previous queuing problems, and an improved working environment for employees, despite serving approximately 45,000 consumers per week.
