Roche Improves Medical Device Management at the Edge with Isovalent and Cilium

Roche, a Switzerland-based leader in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics, needed a better way to manage medical devices and cloud-connected services across customer sites where it had little control over the local IT environment. Its existing edge approach was becoming hard to scale because of limited connectivity control, storage constraints, resilience requirements, and the need to support many external and future services.

Isovalent helped Roche build a new Kubernetes-based edge platform using Cilium and Cilium Service Mesh, with Envoy-based traffic steering, network policies, Cloudflare tunneling, and Hubble for visibility. Isovalent also backported needed capabilities to older Cilium versions. The result was improved network performance, stronger security and observability, and reduced friction with customer firewall and egress requirements across Roche’s 1000+ edge clusters.
