BBC builds journalist graphics tools in 8 months with Isotoma Limited

The BBC faced a challenge with an outdated, clunky graphics creation tool for its journalists. Uptake was stalling and it couldn't support the formats required for various mobile platforms, causing stories to be published without graphics. This led to a specialist team being overburdened with simple requests. Isotoma was tasked with building a new, more user-friendly tool.

Isotoma developed the new tool using React, Node.js, and the Vega graphing library on a serverless AWS architecture. The solution provided journalists with a simple drag-and-drop interface integrated directly into their CMS, featuring a live preview for different devices. The tool can output twelve different graphic types responsively for the BBC's website, apps, and external publishers. Isotoma delivered these production-ready features rapidly in two four-month blocks, and the well-received tool has empowered journalists across BBC News, Sport, and the World Service.
