The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) needed solid evidence that women’s sport received less media exposure than men’s and a deeper understanding of how female athletes were portrayed to justify increased funding and shape a strategy for greater recognition.
iSentia, in collaboration with the UNSW Journalism and Media Research Centre, provided in-depth quantitative and qualitative analysis showing women’s sport represented just 9% of sports television news. The findings gave the ASC compelling proof of the disparity, helped secure renewed government commitment to raise the profile of women’s sport, and created an empirical benchmark for tracking future progress.
