The Art of Designing Factories That Operate Inside Ships

Steel-X, a small Norwegian engineering company founded in 2009, designs and builds stainless-steel fish processing plants for offshore vessels. As the team grew from a rented workshop and took on increasingly complex shipboard projects, it needed a fast, easy-to-use 3D CAD tool to replace slow 2D methods, handle imported supplier geometry, support on-the-fly layout changes, and create convincing visuals for winning contracts.

Steel-X implemented IronCAD, using its intuitive single-scene 3D CAD environment for design, collaboration, and manufacturing documentation. IronCAD helped Steel-X detect clashes before installation, streamline communication with shipbuilders and suppliers, and speed up detailing; the company reported improved performance on very large assemblies and said new features such as ShrinkWrap and Bulk Drawing Generation saved time and helped meet deadlines.
