ITV digitizes 153,000 tapes with Iron Mountain to preserve its broadcast archive

ITV, a major UK public service broadcaster, faced the urgent risk of losing irreplaceable legacy tape assets to obsolete playback technology and metadata gaps. This threatened a culturally significant archive and hindered the broadcaster's ability to meet its content access obligations. ITV partnered with Iron Mountain Media and Archival Services to address this challenge through Project ADA.

Iron Mountain implemented an end-to-end solution to digitize 153,000 tapes, encompassing secure handling, high-quality digitization, cloud storage, and a comprehensive metadata cleansing process. This transformed ITV's archive from an at-risk collection into a searchable, on-demand content asset. The project unlocked faster production, created new streaming revenue opportunities, and established a self-sustaining resource that will fund future preservation efforts.
