Western Area Power Administration reduces inspection time across 17,000+ miles with IQGeo

Western Area Power Administration (WAPA), one of four U.S. Department of Energy power marketing administrations, required a more effective method for monitoring the health of its extensive network of over 17,000 miles of electric transmission lines. They partnered with vendor IQGeo to implement its geospatial software as a mobile field inspection solution for their annual ground and aerial patrols.

The IQGeo software provided a consistent approach for inspections, enabling all field employees to use the same criteria and rating system. This produced consistent health and risk scoring, which allowed WAPA to better prioritize transmission line projects across its region. According to their Chief Operating Officer, the IQGeo solution exponentially reduced the time it takes to complete each inspection, resulting in significant time savings across their entire system of more than 100,000 structures.
