A IQGeo Case Study
TEPCO Power Grid, part of the TEPCO group, is Japan’s largest electric utility and was hit hard by Typhoon Faxai in 2019, leaving 934,000 households without power and causing major damage across the Tokyo metropolitan area. The company struggled to track low-voltage outages, coordinate with outside crews and infrastructure partners, and provide accurate recovery updates, so it needed a better way to see field damage and forecast restoration more reliably. IQGeo provided the geospatial platform used to address this challenge.
IQGeo and partner NESIC implemented a proof of concept that loaded millions of pole locations and other grid assets into the IQGeo Platform, then used it at Disaster Recovery Headquarters to share exact damage locations, combine field reports with smart meter data, and identify “hidden outage” areas. This helped TEPCO dispatch engineers faster, improve coordination and reporting, and produce a detailed government report in a month; TEPCO said that without IQGeo it would have taken twice as long to understand the full damage from extreme weather events.
