The City of Barrie, a fast-growing mid-sized city north of Toronto, faced unreliable coin-only parking meters that regularly faltered in harsh winters and strained a small parking team. To add payment options, improve customer service, and ensure equipment would survive heavy snow and extreme cold, Barrie selected IPS Group, Inc. to pilot single-space, credit-card–enabled smart parking meters and a web-based Data Management System.
IPS Group, Inc. installed solar-powered, weather-sealed smart meters and its DMS, providing remote monitoring and real-time data. The deployment achieved greater than 99% meter uptime, credit-card transactions now represent 10–15% of payments, and targeted rollouts near the hospital and college — combined with rate and enforcement changes — drove nearly a 300% increase in parking revenue in that area while reducing maintenance and improving customer experience.
