Cross-platform mobile gaming apps, powered by the web

BBC needed a more sustainable way to build its children’s game experiences for distribution across app stores, while also addressing the lack of a single cohesive codebase and the difficulty of moving toward modern web app standards. Working with Ionic, BBC looked for a cross-platform approach that could support native iOS, Android, and web experiences from one development model.

Ionic helped BBC implement a Progressive Web App-first strategy using Capacitor, enabling a universal app platform built from a single codebase and shared component set. The result was improved efficiency, lower build and maintenance costs, easier collaboration for existing developers, and greater productivity as BBC could focus more on creating immersive games and future product innovation rather than platform mechanics.
