Tasmanian Land Conservancy saves 900+ volunteer hours with Ionata Digital

The Tasmanian Land Conservancy (TLC) faced the challenge of efficiently processing the vast number of camera trap images uploaded by citizen scientists for its WildTracker program. The volume of data, over 700,000 images, created a significant bottleneck, requiring thousands of volunteer hours to manually sift through and identify wildlife. Ionata Digital collaborated with the TLC to address this scaling issue.

Ionata Digital developed and integrated an AI-powered tool called Stickybeak into the WildTracker platform. This solution uses machine learning to automatically filter out empty images and accurately classify species, achieving accuracy rates of over 90% for many native animals. The implementation by Ionata Digital has saved an estimated 900+ volunteer hours by automatically identifying and removing nearly a third of all uploaded images as blanks, allowing the conservation community to focus on analysis and action.
