ZOLL Connects Emergency Medical Services and Hospitals for Bi-Directional Health Information Exchange and Better Care Coordination

ZOLL, which develops medical devices and electronic patient care record (ePCR) solutions for EMS, faced a critical information challenge: ambulance-to-hospital handoffs relied on radio and paper reports, leaving emergency departments and EMS teams without a complete, bi-directional view of patient history. This gap risked missed information, unnecessary tests or procedures, out-of-network transports, and compromised care and efficiency.

ZOLL implemented InterSystems HealthShare to create a unified health record and enable health information exchange, supporting dispatch lookups, electronic patient packages that travel with patients, and post-event analytics. The solution connected about 2,000 customers to local, regional, and national exchanges, provided cloud-hosted EMR options and FHIR-based interoperability, and delivered improved care coordination, benchmarking, and analytics to support better outcomes and value-based care.
