Wales Selects InterSystems TrakCare as its National Laboratory System

NHS Wales Informatics Service (NWIS) selected InterSystems to deliver a national Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), investing £12.1m to implement a single instance of InterSystems TrakCare Lab. The programme needed to support more than 21 million tests a year for Wales’s 3 million residents, align 18 independent laboratories with seven regional Health Boards, and standardise practice, improve clinical governance, and strengthen clinical data and management information flows.

InterSystems implemented TrakCare Lab with its Caché high-performance database and Ensemble integration platform to provide a centrally managed, regional LIMS that enables workload distribution, real-time infection surveillance, and a complete patient diagnostic record. The solution reduced support and maintenance costs (projected 50% cut in data maintenance/extraction and 30% in analyser interface costs), improved laboratory flexibility and clinician communications, and delivered standardised, more resilient pathology services across Wales.
