A InterSystems Case Study
NHS Lothian serves about 800,000 people around Edinburgh through four acute hospitals and extensive community services. Faced with multiple electronic and paper-based record systems, the board could not produce a single, up-to-date view of patient activity and needed an integrated Patient Management System to capture referrals, diagnostics, treatments and discharge information.
Lothian deployed a single instance of InterSystems TrakCare across its hospitals and specialist sites, providing a unified patient index, interoperability with Scotland’s e-Referrals and demographic services, electronic ordering and access to lab/radiology results and images, and visual alerts to improve ED flow. The system is used by more than 12,000 staff, reduced duplicate data entry, helped meet ED targets, improved efficiency and comprehensiveness of care, and enabled more secure exchange of patient information as it is extended into community services.
