The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Uses InterSystems Ensemble ® to Integrate 130 Systems and Improve Patient Care

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), which operates more than 1,300 facilities and serves over 5.4 million veterans annually, sought to extend its My HealtheVet portal (launched 2003 with hundreds of thousands of users) by integrating it with the VistA electronic medical record to provide medical history, lab results, appointment scheduling and secure messaging. Delivering that functionality required connecting My HealtheVet to more than 130 enterprise systems and reliably correlating patient identities across VA systems.

VA built integration services on InterSystems Ensemble (development began July 2007 and went live a year later), using Ensemble to handle MPI identity correlation, .Net web service access to VistA, secure messaging that posts to the EMR, and message/data transformations with HL7/XML support. The result was a rapid, scalable, high‑performance integration across 130+ systems that empowered veterans with a richer personal health record and secure communications, reduced administrative load and facility visits, lowered missed appointments and call volume, and simplified ongoing development and troubleshooting.
