The NHS Breast Screening Programme's National Breast Screening System (NBSS)

Financial Objects and InterSystems partnered with the NHS Breast Screening Programme to modernize the National Breast Screening System (NBSS). The legacy character‑based UNIX system was hard to learn and use, made appointment rearranging and reporting slow and cumbersome, and was expensive to maintain, so the programme needed a user‑friendly, high‑performance, standards‑based replacement.

The team redeveloped NBSS on the InterSystems Caché platform with a Windows GUI, Crystal Reports for ad‑hoc reporting, and new features such as barcode/touchscreen entry and a Daybook module; migration of sites was completed by 2007. The upgraded system now supports 1,000+ users, cuts appointment changes to a few clicks, reduces routine reports from hours to minutes, improves data accuracy and workflow, and lowers support costs.
