TD Ameritrade, a pioneer in self-directed and online trading and today the world’s largest online equity broker, grew from handling around 5–6 thousand trades a day to roughly 500,000 daily trades as a result of rapid customer growth and acquisitions. That surge — including a merger that added 875,000 customers at once — created a critical challenge: process and reconcile massive volumes of trades and manage customer accounts without constantly overhauling infrastructure.
TD Ameritrade built its Back Office System (BOS) on InterSystems Caché, gaining the performance, reliability, and scalability needed to clear half a million trades per day and to add tens or hundreds of thousands of accounts (or even a million) without stressing the system. InterSystems also provided hands-on planning and onsite support during major conversions, enabling seamless mergers and sustained growth.
